Station 25

Albany, NY

Station 25 reimagines a piece of Albany’s history into a vibrant new chapter for the Park South neighborhood. Built on the former site of the historic Fire Alarm Signal building, this thoughtfully designed affordable housing development blends preservation and progress. The existing 102-year-old Dutch Revival masonry building has been restored and repurposed as a resident fitness and community center for the development.

Behind it rises a new four-story, US Green LEED-certified residential building shaped by a sloping, trapezoidal city block bordered by four streets. A continuous “ribbon” façade detail wraps the new structure, echoing the stone banding of the historic Fire Alarm Signal building and referencing the projecting roof overhang of the mid-century modern Boys and Girls Club across the street.

The building houses 51 modern one- and two-bedroom apartments featuring open floor plans, oversized bathrooms, luxury plank flooring, and Energy Star-rated appliances and lighting. The warm and inviting interior palette features earthy, muted tones reflecting the colors on the exterior of the historic building and pays homage to the Art Nouveau style typical of the vernacular architecture of the heavily Dutch-influenced Albany area. Art installations throughout the site also tell the story of Station 25’s firefighting past.

A pedestrian space between the two buildings provides an entry to the historic building and connects the entry plaza to amenities like the accessible playground. Additional amenities include an outdoor patio, a below-grade parking garage with 30 spaces, central laundry facilities, and a bus stop directly in front of the community.
