Built
on a site previously occupied by the Meeting House Inn, a 100
year-old local landmark, the new design incorporated many salvageable
details of the original building, such as fireplaces, mantels,
doors, and windows. Siting massing and building configurations
were developed to echo that of the original building so that
without slavishly reproducing what had existed before, the look
and feel of the neighborhood was maintained and enhanced. This
attempt to reproduce the architectural "presence" of the original,
mature trees permitted the almost unnoticeable replacement of
the original structure.
The
design challenge of reproducing the "presence" of a smaller,
pre-existing structure was further complicated by a need to
maximize views of the water.
